A Quiet Walk Through the Nijo Neighbourhood
Garrya Nijo Castle Kyoto sits at the threshold of centuries of history. Step outside, and the neighborhood reveals itself — unhurried, layered, worth lingering over. Here is how to make the most of your stay.
Day 1 — Afternoon
After checking in, ease into Kyoto on foot. Start at Mikane Shrine, a small shrine to fortune and metals marked by a gleaming golden torii — just a short walk from the hotel and a striking first impression of the neighborhood. From there, continue to Marukyu Koyamaen Motoan, a café run by the venerable Uji tea house whose teas you will also find as in-room amenities at Garrya. Try the green tea sweets available only here.
Day 1 — Evening
Return to the hotel for dinner at Singular, Garrya's restaurant. The kitchen draws on French technique and Japanese sensibility, presenting seasonal ingredients from Kyoto and beyond in courses that unfold like a contemporary kaiseki. After dinner, take a short walk to Shinsen-en, an ancient imperial garden said to be the birthplace of the Gion Festival's sacred procession. The garden is especially atmospheric after dark — a quiet way to end the evening.
Day 2 — Morning
Begin with Nijo-jo Castle, the UNESCO World Heritage site just steps from the hotel. Walk the Ninomaru Palace's nightingale floors, pause in the gardens, and take in the morning stillness before the crowds arrive. Afterward, visit Nijo Jinya nearby — a merchant house concealing hidden staircases and trap doors, once designed to protect visiting feudal lords. Guided tours are available by reservation.
Return to Garrya at your own pace before checkout.
